Honda was one of the original Japanese imports, and it came to America with one focus in mind – providing the United States with a fuel-efficient subcompact car to battle against rising gas prices!
Over 50 years have gone by since the first Honda N600 brought its small, low horsepower, 30 MPG engine to the American roads. The automotive industry has changed quite a bit in that time. There have been two constants though – fuel continues to rise in price, and Honda continues to provide some of the most fuel-efficient vehicles on the roads!
Honda Civic
When the N600 evolved, the company created a groundbreaking CVCC engine, and in 1974, introduced it in a vehicle built around it – the Civic. Nearly half a century later, the leader in fuel economy in the 70s remains the most fuel-efficient all-gas vehicle in Honda’s line-up!
The 2022 Honda Civic offers a range of options, with the LX trim offering the best fuel economy – 36 MPG combined, with 33 MPG city and 42 MPG highway. This isn’t the lightweight base model either. The turbocharged 4-cylinder engine turns out a peppy 180 horsepower, and the trim comes equipped with high-end features including heated front seats, a blind-spot information system, and the industry-leading Honda Sensing suite of safety technology.
Honda Accord
Following up the Civic as Honda’s second major model on American shores, the Accord has stuck it out all that time as well! Offering a little more space than the Civic at the cost of a few miles per gallon, it’s a fair trade, and the Accord is still one of the most efficient in the mid-size class. The turbocharged 1.5-liter engine offers up 192 horsepower while providing 33 MPG combined. In the city, it hits 30 MPG, while the 38 MPG highway is a class leader. Like the Civic, this isn’t just the base model that gets great fuel economy – both the base LX and the upscale EX-L trims have this. That means you can go with the affordably-priced base model or one with heated leather seating, a moonroof, a 450-watt premium 10-speaker audio system, and more!
Honda CR-V
The compact SUV has been a revolution in the automotive industry. It shouldn’t be a surprise that such a revolutionary company as Honda has created the segment leader in the Honda CR-V. Every CR-V model features that same 1.5-liter turbocharged engine that the Accord uses. In this model, that engine still manages to turn out up to 30 MPG combined – 28 MPG city and 34 MPG highway – in the two-wheel drive powertrains. Going up to four-wheel drive will, of course, increase fuel usage. But it’s minor, dropping to 29 MPG combined, and can be well worth it in pour weather areas. The best part is that this comes with a cavernous interior. Even with five passengers, the CR-V swallows up to 39.2 cubic feet of cargo. Drop the rear seats down, and it opens up 75.8 cubic feet of space. That combination of fuel efficiency and capacity is unmatched across the SUV segment!
Hybrid Progress
Honda was one of the first manufacturers to utilize alternative fuels. In fact, they were maybe too far ahead of the curve. The Honda EV-X electric vehicle prototype was displayed at the 1993 Tokyo Motor Show. It evolved into the Honda EV Plus, a compact car with a range of 81 miles that rolled off the lines in 1997. Eventually, hybrids like the Insight, fully-electric vehicles like the Fit EV, and alternative fuel vehicles like the Clarity Fuel Cell would make an impact but ultimately not last.
Now, Honda has recommitted to modernized electric hybrids and fully-electric vehicles with the Accord Hybrid and CR-V Hybrid. Not too far down the line is the 2024 Honda Prologue – a fully-electric SUV that Honda says is the start to a new, electrified era of Honda vehicles.
