2019 Honda Civic Hatchback

Compact sport utility vehicles might have made a massive impact in recent times, but they just don't have the vibe and the attitude some drivers would rather have in their car or truck. In fact, there are few vehicles that combine the attitude and versatility that many drivers are looking for.

That's where the 2019 Honda Civic Hatchback stands out. As a five-door hatchback, it has plenty of space, and can adjust to fit passengers, cargo, or a mix of the two. Since it's a Civic, this comes without having to give up the sportiness and performance that happens when you go with a taller SUV. So what makes the new Civic Hatchback the hot new hatch that meets the needs of drivers across the market?

What are the Performance Features of the 2019 Honda Civic Hatchback?

There's no need for multiple engine options when you offer a single, capable, thrilling powerplant.

Turning out 174 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque at the base level, the 2019 Honda Civic Hatchback is responsive off the line, can merge with ease, and is compelling when you want to get that extra burst to overtake slower traffic on the open roadway. Every Civic Hatchback comes with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) standard. With the Sport trim, you get a tuned version of the engine that increases the horsepower output to 180 horsepower, and adds Dual-Mode Paddle Shifters to the CVT gearbox. Or, if you're a traditionalist, go with the six-speed manual transmission, which also comes with additional torque, stepping up to 177 lb-ft.

The control provided by the Civic Hatchback is what really sets it apart from other vehicles that offer similar interior capacities. A wide track and low, athletic stance combines with electric power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering and a responsive, active suspension for smooth, clean performance and a smooth ride. From the tight urban streets around State College to the curvy backroads of Tyrone and Philipsburg, it gives the driver confidence and comfort.

How spacious is the Interior of the Honda Civic Hatchback?

Profile view of the Honda civic hatchback While it sits on the chassis of a compact car, the interior of the 2019 Honda Civic Hatchback provides the spaciousness of compact and mid-size SUVs. While front-seat passengers get plenty of room, as is the norm, Honda has considered back-row passengers as well. Average adults will have no problem riding around State College or taking longer trips to Mt. Union thanks to 36.0 inches of leg room in the back seat, as well as wide seats offering 48.8 inches of hip room and 55.0 inches of shoulder room.

Where the Civic Hatchback makes the biggest impact is in the cargo area. Even with the seats in place, there's room for 25.7 cubic feet of cargo, plenty for hauling a busy family around or packing for a road trip. If you need to maximize cargo space - moving out of a Penn State dorm or packing for a weekend camping - you can drop the rear seats and haul up to 46.2 cubic feet of cargo, a measurement that eclipses many compact and small SUVs.

What Safety Features are available with the 2019 Civic Hatchback?

Rearview of the Civic Hatchback driving away As a company, Honda feels that safety should not be an option, and that standardizing important safety systems is the key to making the roads of Tyrone and the parking garages at Penn State safer for everyone, driver and pedestrian alike.

Every single 2019 Honda Civic Hatchback features the Honda Sensing system, a comprehensive safety suite. This includes Forward Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning with Lane Keeping Assist System, Collision Mitigation Braking System, Road Departure Mitigation System, and Adaptive Cruise Control with Low-Speed Follow. These systems are often options even on luxury sedans - but they are all standard on the Civic Hatchback. In fact, the only safety features that Honda leaves as options are Automatic High-Beam Headlights and the Honda LaneWatch system, which uses a passenger-side camera to display live video to expand your range of sight on the far side of your vehicle.

What Trim Levels are available with the 2019 Honda Civic Hatchback?

Value is at the heart of Honda. Here at Bobby Rahal Honda of State College, we understand that car-shopping on a budget can be hard to do, but the 2019 Honda Civic Hatchback offers something for pretty much any budget, and at every budget, a smart value.

The sensible Civic Hatchback LX trim is the base model, and is built to fit into even the tightest budgets. Still, there's plenty included, from power amenities to a tilt and telescoping steering column. Simple, comfortable cloth trim and durable soft-touch plastics adorn the interior, and the layout is clean and easy to navigate. A four-speaker, 160-watt audio system is standard, centered around the 5-inch color LCD screen in the center stack. Bluetooth hands-free phone and streaming audio are standard across every Civic hatchback model.

Most of the upgrades in the Sport trim are in the powertrain, but there are still some added touches throughout the interior of this Civic Hatchback. A leather-wrapped steering wheel, a leather-wrapped shift knob, and sport pedals add a hint of luxury, while the rear-seat center armrest brings some comfort to rear-seat passengers when you don't need the space for three. Outside the trim gets an underbody spoiler kit, dual-outlet exhaust, and 18-inch wheels for better grip.

While it's not a massive leap on the price tag, the Civic Hatchback EX is definitely a great deal when you consider the extras that come with it. To begin with, standard Remote Engine Start also engages the standard Dual-Zone Automatic Climate Control, turning on cooling air in the hot summer months and defrosters in the frigid Tyrone winters. You'll walk out your door and step into a car that's not too hot, not too cold - it's just right. Even if you don't want to start it remotely, standard Smart Entry and Push Button Start means you won't have to fish around for your keys. A one-touch power moonroof with tilt is standard, as are heated exterior mirrors to prevent icing over in the winter. Technology takes a step up as well, with an eight-speaker audio system centered around a 7-inch electrostatic touch-screen with knobs and hard keys for primary controls. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration is standard, along with SiriusXM and HD radio.

At the pinnacle of the Civic Hatchback is the Sport Touring trim, which takes the performance aspects of the Sport model and adds on tons of luxury touches. On top of the features included in the Sport trim, the Sport Touring models get a 12-speaker, 540-watt premium audio system with subwoofer. In addition to the heated front seats, outboard rear passengers also get heated seating. As with the Sport trim, Sport Touring gets a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, sport pedals, the underbody spoiler kit, and the dual outlet exhaust.
